As the sailing season winds down, it’s a great time to take care of your gear and stay active, so you’re ready to hit the water next year. Here are some useful tips for all Welbeck Sailing Club members during the off-season:
1. Boat and Equipment Maintenance
- Check your boat and kit: Inspect sails, hulls, and rigging for any damage or wear. A little maintenance now prevents bigger problems next season.
- Clean and dry your gear: Make sure wetsuits, buoyancy aids, and sails are completely dry before storage to avoid mould or mildew.
- Protect metal parts: Apply a light coating of anti-corrosion spray to shackles, blocks, and other metal fittings.
2. Winter Footwear & Clothing Care
- Clean and dry sailing boots thoroughly to prevent cracking.
- Treat leather boots with a suitable conditioner and store them in a dry place.
- Check zippers, seals, and Velcro on wet weather gear so everything is ready for spring.
3. Stay Active & Keep Skills Sharp
- Light fitness: Core strength, balance, and flexibility exercises will keep you sailing-ready.
- Theory practice: Review knot-tying, safety drills, or RYA theory if you have your logbook.
- Indoor sailing games or simulators can be a fun way to stay engaged.
4. Plan Ahead
- Keep an eye on the club website, WhatsApp group, or emails for off-season events and training opportunities.
- Consider booking courses early for the next season — spots fill up fast!
Staying proactive during the winter ensures a smooth, fun, and safe sailing season ahead. The committee at Welbeck Sailing Club are always happy to advise on maintenance and training — don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have questions.
Fair winds, and we look forward to seeing you on the water in 2026!
