RYA Dinghy Courses
All our RYA courses are run at Welbeck Sailing Club, on the tranquil waters of The Great Lake, Welbeck Estates near Norton, Nottinghamshire. Our facilities include a wide range of dinghies, (add link to boat page) a main training room, changing and showering facilities. Along with a clubroom where drinks are available.

We provide a RYA Syllabus and Logbook as part of the course and have other material available to purchase to support the courses.
Our student instructor ratios are 6:1 in accordance with the RYA guidance, but aim to be generally better, and safety boat coverage is always on duty during sailing courses.
RYA Level 1
The RYA Level 1 Dinghy Sailing Course is the perfect introduction to the exhilarating world of sailing. Designed for complete beginners, this course focuses on the fundamentals of dinghy sailing, providing you with a solid foundation in essential skills and safety.
Participants will learn how to: rig, launch, and recover a dinghy, as well as basic sailing techniques such as steering and controlling boat speed.
With hands-on instruction from experienced RYA-certified instructors, you’ll gain confidence on the water while exploring key concepts like wind direction and sail trim.
By the end of the course, you’ll be able to sail in light winds under supervision, opening the door to further adventures on the water.

RYA Level 2
The RYA Level 2 Dinghy Sailing Course is designed to build on the foundational skills learned in Level 1, enhancing your competence and confidence on the water.
This course focuses on developing essential sailing techniques, including tacking, gybing, and boat handling in various conditions. You’ll learn to sail independently, mastering skills such as launching and landing, controlling boat speed, and understanding basic navigation.
With guidance from our experienced RYA instructors, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of sailing theory and safety, enabling you to sail a dinghy without supervision in light to moderate winds.
The Level 2 course is the gateway to independent sailing and a stepping stone to more advanced training, offering an enjoyable and rewarding experience on the water.

RYA Youth Sailing Scheme (YSS Level 1 - 4)
The RYA Youth Sailing Scheme offers a structured pathway for young sailors, providing them with the skills and confidence to navigate the waters safely and enjoyably. Spanning four progressive levels, the scheme begins with an introduction to the basics of sailing and water safety at Level 1. As participants advance through Levels 2 and 3, they will refine their skills, learn essential sailing techniques, and gain a deeper understanding of boat handling and navigation. By Level 4, young sailors will have developed the competence and independence to sail confidently in a variety of conditions. Each level is designed to be fun and engaging, ensuring that students not only learn but also cultivate a lifelong passion for sailing.
RYA YSS Level 1
Level 1 introduces young sailors to the basics of sailing, focusing on building confidence and understanding on the water
RYA YSS Level 2
Level 2 builds on the skills acquired in Level 1, aiming to enhance competence and self-reliance on the water
RYA YSS Level 3
Level 3 refines skills and advances techniques to improve efficiency and performance on the water, and in variable conditions
RYA YSS Level 4
Level 4 challenges young sailors to further enhance their sailing abilities through advanced boat handling and maneuvering skills
